Belgian documentary “Aterro do Flamengo” is shot in Rio with support from Filme Rio-Rio Film Commission

Belgian artist Sophie Nys, an admirer of landscaping artist Burle Marx’s work, came to Rio to shoot a combination documentary/videoart piece that the artists describes as a cinedocumentary. The picture focuses on the work Marx did for the Aterro do Flamengo park and consists of basically one single-shot sequence that lasts almost an hour. Achieving this feat took four days of location shooting in the park, in January, with support from Filme Rio-Rio Film Commission.

“I started requesting permits in December, but all attention was focused on the New Year's Eve's fireworks logistics, which made negotiations difficult. The FRRFC made the whole process quick and efficient”, says producer Renata Fazzio, from Urge Produções. “We got the necessary support in order to track the shot in a non-traditional way that included wood ramps, for instance”.

Aterro do Flamengo, which will premiere at Brussel’s Fine Arts Palace, originated from Sophie’s passion for that location. “It’s interesting not only to observe the natural beauty of the place, but also to realize how the park is part of the life of the people in this city. It’s where they go to exercise, relax, enjoy a shady tree. I opted for the single-shot sequence because I didn’t want to manipulate the place’s dynamics”, the director explains. “I was gladly surprised to realize that everything went well, I am thankful for the logistics made possible by all parties involved” .
Arto Lindsay did the soundtrack and the song lyrics allude to the species of plants used by Burle Marx when designing the park.
