The beautiful Grajaú State Park, in the city’s North Zone, occupies a 55 hectares area of the northeast face of the Três Rios mountains that extends over to the Tijuca National Park. Opened in 1978 as the Grajaú Environmental Reserve, it aims primarily at restoring natural ecosystems of great ecological and aesthetic importance and conducting scientific research and activities concerning environmental education, recreation, ecological tourism and sports, mainly mountaineering.

The park has an administrative office and a general area for public use, with a playground, exercising equipment, picnic facilities an open-air amphitheater and a room for cultural activities.

- With its elegant pyramid shape, the Andaraí Rock, situated in the park, attracts many climbers.

- The most common native species found in the park are fig trees, yagrumo (Cecropia peltata), carrapateira, Yellow Trumpet Tree (Tabebuia aurea), white cedarwood, pau-d’alho (Crateva benthamii Eichler), orchids, jurubeba (Solanum paniculatum Linnaeus) and caiapiá/ Dorstenia brasiliensis, which faces the risk of extinction.


- The bush dog (Speothos venaticus), the preá-do-mato (Cavia aperea) and the star monkey (Callithrix jacchus) are some of the animal species found in the park, along with birds like saíra-azul (Dacnis cayana), saíra-amarela (Tangara cayana), quail dove, hummingbird, urubu-caçador (Coragyps atratus), gavião-carijó (Rupornis magnirostris ) and parakeet.
