Officially, Miguel Pereira is a young municipality in the state of Rio de Janeiro – it seceded from Vassouras in 1955 – but it has a long history. Drovers who used to make stops there during the opening of the first roads in the Tinguá ridge and the Paraíba Valley, in the early 18th century, became the first settlers. In 1770, the Piedade de Vera da Cruz farm was opened and went on to become an important coffee producer. By the end of the 19th century the construction of a railway that crisscrossed the mountain ranges brought progress to the city, later known for its summer camps and casino-hotels, at a time when gambling was still legal in Brazil. Once the railway was deactivated, in the mid-seventies, the municipality took a hard blow. Nowadays it relies on tourism and is known for having of the world’s best climates.

Lake Javary is one of the city’s most beautiful, signature locations. It was formed by the construction of the Córrego do Saco dam. It’s easily accessible, as it is close to the city center, with one of its banks neighboring RJ-125, the town’s main avenue.

Miguel Pereira has been named a climatic health resort, due to its constant, mild temperatures year-round and to the fairly spaced amount of rain it gets.

Summer temperatures hover around 24.6 Celsius, with winter lows reaching 10.3 C. The highest temperature ever recorded there was 35,7 C, with -2 C being the lowest.
