Situated between the ocean and the Macaé hills, the Imboassica Lagoon is one of the most beautiful locations in the municipality. About five square kilometers large, right on the border with the municipality of Rio das Ostras, it’s separated from the ocean by a narrow strip of sand.

Located about 1.1 km from the city center, the lagoon is a hot spot for outdoor activities and nautical sports such as wind sailing. The area is also popular among fishermen.

Walking on the strip of sand that separates the lagoon from the ocean, one can appreciate the contrast between the rolling waves, on one side, and the serene lagoon water, on the other.

Sprinkled with bars around its edge, the place attracts sunset watchers.

To alleviate flooding problems, in August of 2001 the lagoon was outfitted with a channel to allow for the exceeding water to flow out.
