Laura Alvim wanted to be an actress, but her parents wouldn’t allow that. For them, it was an unworthy profession. But that frustration fueled her will. So Laura set up a stage in her home where she could recite poetry and act out to an audience of friends – and where she could bring together veteran and upcoming artists. Six months before she died, this great patron of the arts turned her home into a cultural center, which was opened to the public on May 12, 1986.
The Laura Alvim Cultural Center (Casa de Cultura Laura Alvim) includes within its two thousand square feet a café, a bookstore, three movie theaters, the Laura Alvim Theater (with 245 seats), the smaller Rogério Cardoso Theater (with only 70 seats), the Laura Alvim Gallery (which regularly presents exhibitions by renowned artists such as Vik Muniz, Ernesto Neto and many others) and the Laura Museum, with its permanent display of Laura’s and her family’s furniture and personal effects.
Filming at the center must fit its working hours.

The house currently belongs to Funarj (The Rio de Janeiro State Anita Mantuano Arts Foundation), which is part of the State Culture Secretariat.
The Laura Alvim movie theaters offer a front row of chaise longues, Dolby sound, digital projection and wider seats.
The theater walls are made of stone, and the seats were designed by Oscar Niemeyer.
